Over the following decade, I have been lucky enough to work in various roles within HE and have worked closely with students at various stages of their journey, as potential applicants through to graduation and alumni, where my passion for education has only grown further. I completed my PGCE in 2016 and have been fortunate enough to teach on over 7 degree programmes, including Business and Law.

More recently I have completed a Fellowship in HE and am looking to further my postgraduate studies. Now working full time for the Business, Law and Professional team, I deliver modules from level 3 to level 5 and enjoy being a tutor for a range of cohorts.

David Stephens has over a decade of lecturing experience after initially being employed in the education sector as an assessor for NVQs. David’s specialist subject is accountancy, and he completed the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification before progressing on to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). David has lectured on AAT, CIMA and ACCA programmes as well as being employed as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Plymouth leading on specific Business, Accounting and Finance degree modules. David has previously been employed as a retail manager and also has experience of working as a Management Accountant in the public-sector along with accountancy practice experience. David is educated to a masters level, holds an honours degree in Business Economics and is a qualified assessor and verifier. He was appointed as HE Lead for Business, Management and Leadership in July 2022.

David completed a dissertation in 2020 where he conducted primary research to understand how the political ideology of neoliberalism has impacted upon the roles and responsibilities of practitioners within post-16 education. The research project further sought to understand how political ideologies can directly and indirectly impact upon education and how neoliberalist policies in particular can distort the nature and scope of education. David received a distinction for his work from the University of Plymouth.

Research and scholarly activity

David researched the relationship between political ideologies and education for his dissertation (MA Education). More specifically, he looked at how the political ideology of neoliberalism has shaped the public-private partnership and has led to a general marketisation and commodification of education in certain spheres. Moreover, he investigated how this prevalent ideology impacts upon practitioners, their roles, and whether or not it creates any additional pressure in the workplace.

I’ve worked part-time for South Devon College since January 2014 on the delivery of the CIPD professional qualifications at Level 3 and 5. I do this alongside self-employment as an HR Consultant, using the skills and knowledge I have gained from a successful career in HR of over 25 years.

Practically focussed in my teaching, I ensure students leave my lessons with an understanding of the business environment, the external and internal challenges to business and how they impact on people’s work and their working lives. With students studying from a wide range of sectors the classroom environment is a very rich one and I ensure all students fill their kit bags up with tools, theories and their practical application to use back in their HR/People careers.

Recent feedback from a student said: ‘I thoroughly enjoyed completing the Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management with South Devon College. The face-to-face weekly sessions were invaluable not only for the richness of the lessons, but also to connect with other students who were all at different points in their professional careers. South Devon College made it easy to access resources and it was brilliant having an experienced tutor who was passionate about what they were teaching, who gave insightful and constructive feedback, and made us all laugh too! Thank you!
