Horticulture and Bricklaying students support UCSD Therapy Garden

After the successful Halloween Bake Sale last week, the latest in a number of fundraising events, University Centre South Devon (UCSD) is pleased to announce that the next phase of work has commenced on the UCSD Therapy Garden.

Guided by Lecturer Lorraine Shears, a motivated group of Horticulture students spent their Monday afternoon clearing the weeds that had overgrown in the summer, leaving it spick and span for a busy team of Brickwork students to start laying the pond.

Under the supervision of Lecturer Mike Prosser, students quickly got to work on the pond and created a rockery to encourage wildlife to the garden. Despite the rainy weather and muddy ground, students even made a small stone path for wildlife to enter the pond, directing them towards the pond’s inbuilt steps.

Over the next few weeks the College’s Brickwork students will continue working in the garden, laying a patio for the summer house to sit on. Using generous contributions donated by Linden Homes, the garden will be ready for Horticulture students to start soft landscaping and planting in spring 2019.

This innovative project has been made possible with funding help from the University of Plymouth, Linden Homes and local fundraising projects.

UCSD would like to make a special mention to PC for Sustainable Construction Dave Worthington and Higher Apprenticeship students Sam Betts and Oliver Swift in securing the recent generous donation from Linden Homes.

Located next to the UCSD campus, the garden has been designed to be inclusive for all UCSD students, with wheelchair access and plants for both visual and hearing impairments, and will help to encourage local wildlife in creating a peaceful environment.

The next fundraiser for the garden will be the ‘12 days of Christmas Raffle Prizes‘ with tickets going on sale on Monday 13th November. Prizes include a £100 gift voucher for The Cary Arms, a 3 course lunch for 4 at the Salcombe Harbour Hotel, and many more goodies!
