FdA Social and Community Intervention

We consider a variety of qualifications and relevant experience, and each application is assessed on its own merit.

To enrol on this course, you will be required to have:

• Maths and English GCSE at Grade 4(C) or above, or an equivalent
• A minimum of 48 UCAS points from a Level 3 qualification.

As you will be working with the public, you will be required to complete an online enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prior to the start of the academic term and this must be renewed as required throughout the duration of the course. An enhanced DBS check covers all previous convictions, including spent ones.

You will be required to have an admissions interview with a member of the university team, where you are required to demonstrate the necessary motivation, potential, experience and/or knowledge to follow your chosen programme successfully.

If English Is not your first language, you will need an ELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component.

Each module is worth a specified number of credits: you take a combination of compulsory (and if available optional modules) enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. For full time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of 6 modules. For part time students it will depend on the intensity of your studies.

Year 1 Modules

The first year of the degree will focus on giving you a foundation of knowledge in social care and social welfare-based theory. You will learn about how humans develop and how this would influence the way you support particular groups. You will also learn about upholding professional conduct and ethics when working in the social care field.

Year 2 Modules

The second year of the degree will be focused upon supporting vulnerable groups with complex needs. Social issues such as homelessness, addiction, and anti-social behaviour will be analysed with a focus on intervention and support.

Timetables are normally available one month before the commencement of your studies. Generally, this course is timetabled over 3 days a week.

This programme will provide you with the opportunity to undertake a work placement during the second year. This placement will be supported by your academic team and is a requirement to achieve module credit. University Centre South Devon can support you if required in locating you a work placement. Associated costs relating to travel to your placement is your responsibility and can be supported by your first year bursary.

This support has been crucial to the success of many past students who may not come from a traditional education pathway, and helps ensure your success.

When not attending lectures, seminars or practicals you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations where applicable. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, the University Centre South Devon Research Centre, and our course specific environments.

Upon completion of this Foundation degree, students can progress to our BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies or our BSc (Hons) Social and Therapeutic Interventions. Alternatively, students may opt to apply to join year two of BSc Social Work at Plymouth University. Please note, this is subject to meeting Plymouth University’s entry requirements, and upon being successful at interview.

Alternatively, you could seek employment in a range of roles that focus on working with vulnerable groups, such as those found in the charity, public and social care sectors.
